In 2015, Ann Marie was traveling in India where she first became aware of some well-defined, visible patches of hypopigmented skin on her back. She was later diagnosed with one of the most common skin conditions in the world: Tinea versicolor. Tinea versicolor is a superficial, commensal overgrowth that safely (and reversibly) impacts human skin pigmentation. Serendipitously, while still in Mumbai, Ann Marie also took special notice of the overwhelming demand for skin pigmentation products, and had an epiphany:
”Could we figure out how Tinea versicolor impacts the skin? And could we leverage it to develop cosmetic products?".
The answer to both of those questions turned out to be YES.
Together, Ann Marie and her husband Michael began a scientific and entrepreneurial journey to utilize naturally occurring metabolites (produced endogenously in the human skin microbiome) to address the massive unmet demand for safe and effective pigmentation products in the global cosmetic marketplace.
